Some people just can't/won't accept it. I would agree that mom is probably worried about them, just not handling it well. It could be worse, it could be friends doing it because they think it's funny and "it can't make you sick" (not true after 8+ years). Mom is probably just trying to look out for them, and doing it in a really uncaring way.
